New Delhi: Many political implications are being drawn from the Delhi MCD election results. While the BJP suffered a setback despite winning the most seats, the AAP and Congress surprised with their victories.

Mayoral elections are scheduled for four months, so what do the equations say? Let's find out. The results of the by-elections for 12 seats in the Delhi Municipal Corporation will not significantly impact municipal politics.

The BJP already holds a comfortable majority in the House. In fact, winning seven more seats has increased its strength. In 2025, the BJP won the MCD Mayor and Standing Committee elections without the seven councillors it had won.

Now, the increase in numbers from the House to the zones will only benefit the BJP. Currently, in the 250-member MCD House, the BJP has 123 councillors with the victory of seven new councillors, while the AAP has only 101 councillors. Congress has nine councillors, while two are independents.

In the 2022 MCD general elections, the AAP won 134 seats, but due to the rebel councillors, it now has only 101 councillors. In the mayoral and deputy mayoral elections, in addition to councillors, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs, as well as the 14 nominated MLAs of the MCD, also have the right to vote.

In the 2025 mayoral elections, the BJP candidate easily won without these seven new councillors. BJP candidate Raja Iqbal Singh received 133 votes, while the AAP had 119 at that time. Nevertheless, the AAP boycotted the election. The mayoral and deputy mayoral elections will be held in April 2026.

The BJP now has a strength of 141 (123 councillors, seven MPs, and 11 MLAs), while only 137 votes are required to elect the mayor. Whereas AAP currently has only 107 members (101 councillors, three Rajya Sabha members, and three MLAs).

Aam Aadmi Party could have returned to power in the corporation, but 15 councillors broke away from AAP and formed the Indraprastha Vikas Party, which will now cause AAP losses until 2027. The corporation's general elections will be held in December 2027. Consequently, the mayor and deputy mayor elections are scheduled for April 2026 and April 2027.

What is the current status of the corporation house?

Total members - 284 (250 councillors, 7 Lok Sabha MPs, 3 Rajya Sabha members, 14 MLAs, 10 nominated members)

  • BJP - 141 (123 councillors, 7 Lok Sabha MPs, 11 MLAs)
  • AAP - 107 (101 councillors, 3 Rajya Sabha members, and 3 MLAs)
  • Congress - 9
  • Indraprastha Vikas Party - 15
  • All India Forward Bloc - 1
  • Independent - 1
  • Nominated councillors - 10
