New Delhi: The weather in Delhi-NCR is gradually changing, with visible signs of winter lingering across the region. On the morning of January 21, several parts of the national capital experienced light fog and haze, maintaining a chill in the air.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s minimum temperature today is expected to hover around 9°C, while the maximum temperature may reach up to 22°C. During the daytime, partly cloudy skies are likely, creating a mixed effect of mild sunshine and cold conditions.

Western Disturbance Influencing Weather Patterns

Meteorologists have attributed this shift in weather to an active western disturbance affecting northern India. A fresh western disturbance is expected to move toward the region, with its impact likely to be felt on January 23 and 24.

During this period, Delhi-NCR may witness light rainfall or drizzle. After the rain, a slight drop in temperature is expected, which could intensify the cold once again and extend winter-like conditions in the region.

Alert for Strong Winds on January 23

The IMD has issued a special alert for January 23, warning of strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour. In some areas, these winds may be accompanied by light rain and thunderstorms.

Due to the possibility of gusty winds, residents—especially those in open areas and two-wheeler riders—have been advised to exercise caution. Authorities have also recommended avoiding standing near trees, electric poles, and large hoardings to prevent accidents.

Air Quality Remains a Major Health Concern

While weather conditions are changing, air pollution continues to be a serious issue in Delhi. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached alarming levels.

On Tuesday morning, the AQI was recorded at 447, placing it in the “severe” or “hazardous” category. PM10 levels were measured at 408 micrograms per cubic meter, while PM2.5 levels stood at 298 micrograms per cubic meter—both far above safe limits.

Experts say that cold temperatures, low wind speeds, and high moisture levels are trapping pollutants close to the ground. This has led to persistent smog and reduced visibility across the region.

Health Advisory for Residents

Medical experts have warned that such poor air quality can be especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and individuals suffering from asthma, respiratory problems, or heart conditions. Common symptoms may include eye irritation, sore throat, coughing, and breathing difficulties.

Doctors advise people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, wear protective masks when stepping out, and stay indoors as much as possible. Using air purifiers at home may also help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.

Will There Be Any Relief Ahead?

The IMD believes that the expected rainfall and stronger winds on January 23 and 24 could bring some temporary relief from pollution by dispersing pollutants. Until then, residents of Delhi-NCR are urged to remain cautious, monitor weather updates, and prioritize their health and safety.
