New Delhi: Delhi Police has stepped up security across central Delhi ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place on Friday. Officials said personnel would exercise maximum restraint while maintaining law and order and ensuring compliance with prohibitory orders.

More than 6,000 police personnel have been deployed across the New Delhi area, alongside Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The arrangements aim to prevent a repeat of the violence witnessed during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march over the NEET paper leak issue, in which over 118 police personnel and around 60 protesters were reported injured.

6,000 Police Personnel, CAPF on Alert

According to the reports, security has been strengthened around Connaught Place, Rajiv Chowk, Central Park, Jantar Mantar, Palika Bazaar, nearby Metro stations and other sensitive locations.

Additional personnel have been mobilised from other districts, while 5,000 police personnel have been kept in reserve for deployment if the situation demands. A total of 220 CAPF companies have been earmarked for New Delhi and other sensitive areas, including adjoining districts and border locations.

Thirty CAPF companies are scheduled to be deployed during each shift. Officials said the strength could be increased if the crowd grows or the demonstration continues late into the night.

Barricades have been installed at several locations, including Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, ITO and Sansad Marg. Traffic diversions are also planned, with updates to be issued to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

Festive Season Adds to Security Challenges

The proposed march comes as Delhi prepares for increased public activity during the festive season, when markets, shopping complexes, religious places and public transport networks typically experience heavier footfall. Central Delhi, particularly Connaught Place and adjoining commercial areas, remains an important destination for shoppers, tourists and office goers.

Authorities are therefore facing the dual challenge of managing the proposed demonstration while ensuring that festive shopping, business operations and routine public movement are not unnecessarily disrupted. Security personnel have been placed on alert to respond to crowding, potential traffic bottlenecks and any situation that could affect public order.

Market associations have also sought protection for businesses in Connaught Place, citing concerns over possible disruption to commercial activity. Police arrangements are intended to maintain security while limiting inconvenience to traders, employees, customers and visitors.

Central Park Closed, Alternative Venue Offered

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced that Central Park will remain closed to the public on Friday and Saturday for administrative reasons.

Police officials said they would consider allowing a limited number of protesters to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem at an alternative location, provided suitable arrangements could be made.

Delhi Police has maintained that the proposed march has not been granted permission. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remain in force in Connaught Place and surrounding areas.

The proposed demonstration comes amid tensions between CJP and Delhi Police over protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The march was announced after CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to judicial custody following their entry into Jantar Mantar on October 13.

Student groups, activists and Aam Aadmi Party supporters are also expected to join the demonstration.

Police have urged people to avoid unauthorised gatherings and warned that violations of prohibitory orders could invite legal action. Market associations have also sought protection for businesses in Connaught Place, citing concerns over possible disruption to commercial activity.
