New Delhi: A day after the tragic collapse of a five-storey PG building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the accident site and announced strict action against those responsible. The collapse, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, claimed the lives of six people and left several others injured.
The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, reportedly collapsed while renovation work was underway. The incident triggered a massive rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other emergency teams.
During her visit, CM Rekha Gupta said negligence behind the collapse would not be tolerated. She assured that strict action would be taken against the building owner and any government officials found responsible for lapses.
“This is a tragic incident caused by negligence. No one responsible will be spared,” Gupta said while reviewing the rescue and investigation efforts.
An FIR has already been registered against the building owner and others, while a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
The Delhi government has now directed authorities to identify and take action against unsafe structures across the city. CM Gupta ordered inspections of PG accommodations and residential buildings, especially those with unauthorised floors and safety violations.
Officials said the adjoining building near the collapsed structure has been declared unsafe, evacuated and will be demolished. Authorities have also started reviewing other vulnerable buildings in the area.
Preliminary investigation suggests that basement excavation and renovation work may have weakened the structure. Officials are also examining whether water accumulation during the monsoon affected the building’s foundation.
The Satya Niketan tragedy has once again raised concerns over the safety standards of PG accommodations in Delhi, especially in areas housing large numbers of students. Authorities have assured that a wider safety drive will be carried out to prevent similar incidents in the future.
