Delhi Police arrests total five over IYC protest at Bharat Mandapam
New Delhi: Police has arrested Jitendra Yadav from Gwalior in connection with the Youth Congress protest at Bharat Mandapam during the AI Impact Summit in the National Capital, said Delhi Police on Monday.
This is the fifth arrest made by Delhi Police in connection with the protest.
Earlier, the Police has arrested four other IYC (India Youth Congress) leaders namely Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Ajay Kumar and Narasimha Yadav. They were remanded to five days of police custody by the Patiala House Court on Saturday under provisions including BNS Sections 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), offences carrying punishment exceeding three years.
Counsel representing the accused submitted before the court that the individuals are affiliated with a political party and were exercising their democratic right to protest at Bharat Mandapam. The defence argued that the demonstration was peaceful and that no video evidence shows any act of violence. It was further stated that the accused are office bearers and well-educated individuals holding academic degrees.
The arguments come after members of the Indian Youth Congress staged a protest at Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the AI Impact India Summit in the national capital. During the demonstration, party workers removed their shirts bearing the slogan “Compromised PM” as a symbolic mark of dissent.
In an earlier statement, the Indian Youth Congress said the protest was directed against what it described as a “compromised Prime Minister who has traded the identity of the country at the AI Summit.”
Police later detained the protesters.
