Dense fog disrupts air and rail travel in Delhi; 20 flights cancelled, trains delayed

New Delhi: Most parts of eastern and northern India were gripped by a severe cold wave on Wednesday. ​​Air and rail traffic were severely affected in the capital Delhi due to dense fog and extremely low visibility. The impact of the fog was clearly visible at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday morning, where several flights were delayed and some had to be cancelled.

A video from ANI news agency showed thick fog covering the runways and terminal area of ​​the airport. This adverse weather condition has increased the difficulties for passengers. People traveling long distances had to wait for hours, and many passengers' connecting flights were also affected.

Flights Cancelled, Many Flights Delayed
According to officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, at least 10 flights had to be cancelled on Tuesday due to fog and low visibility, while more than 270 flights departed later than their scheduled time.

The situation worsened on Wednesday, with at least 20 flights cancelled and many others delayed. Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status before departure and to arrive at the airport with extra time.

Rail Traffic Also Affected
The impact of the fog was not limited to air services. Due to dense fog in North India, several trains are also running significantly behind schedule. Visuals from New Delhi Railway Station showed large crowds of passengers on the platforms waiting for their trains. Many passengers reported that their trains were running 3 to 6 hours late, causing them considerable hardship in the cold weather.

Air Quality Index at Dangerous Levels in the Capital
The air quality in the capital was recorded in the severe category on Wednesday morning. It had already reached the severe category on Tuesday. ​​The day again began with a thick layer of mist and fog, along with a layer of smog.

According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the capital's air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 355 on Wednesday morning. This falls into the "very poor" category. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 8 AM, the AQI in various parts of Delhi was recorded as follows: Alipur 333, Anand Vihar 374, Ashok Vihar 362, Aya Nagar 271, Bawana 352, Burari 320, and Chandni Chowk 382.
