New Delhi: The family members of Delhi Police officials who were injured during the student demonstration held recently came forward and spoke to the media on Friday and alleged that the officials have been attacked continuously while doing their job and their pain is being ignored for the most part.
Family members of the injured officials showed video footage at a press conference held in New Delhi and alleged that there were anti-social elements who have participated in the protests and they are the ones who attacked police officials.
The daughter of a sub-inspector in Delhi Police force claimed that her father was manhandled by a mob and almost lynched during his deployment in the area where the protests were going on.
According to her, he was deployed at the front line for maintaining law and order when he got attacked, making him unconscious for several hours. She mentioned that her father came back home with his clothes drenched in blood, which is perhaps one of the most traumatic incidents faced by her family.
Moreover, she also talked about the narrative that was being built around these protests, where attacks on policemen have hardly been reported.
The wife of an assistant sub-inspector talked about how her husband got injured during stone-pelting. As per her claim, the protective helmet of her husband got shattered because of the violence, and she felt that it probably saved his life.
An officer’s son claimed that his father got head injuries when he was assisting the senior officers in moving away from the spot where the stone-pelting took place. He further pointed out that the online discussions had mostly been regarding allegations made against the police but no attention had been paid to their injuries.
The wife of an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) talked about the emotional distress in her family.
The families called for parity in the recognition of the sacrifices of the police personnel, noting that officers who are wounded while ensuring peace deserve justice and public backing as well.
Their comments come amid continuing debates among political parties regarding the reaction of the police to the student demonstrations. In the meantime, the Delhi Police said it would not pursue any adverse legal action against the protesters, except those with criminal records.
