Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday claimed to have uncovered a suspected Hizbul Mujahideen-linked terror module in the Handwara-Kupwara region and arrested an alleged former militant accused of operating as a 'hybrid terrorist'.
The operation was carried out by a joint team of Handwara Police, Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles and 92 Battalion of the CRPF following intelligence inputs about suspected terror activities in the area.
According to police officials, security forces conducted a search operation at a specific location in Handwara town after receiving information about possible activities linked to a militant network. During the operation, one person was detained and questioned regarding his alleged involvement with the suspected module.
Police identified the accused as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohd Sultan Bhat, a resident of Kruhmura area of Handwara. Security forces allegedly recovered a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 16 rounds of pistol ammunition from his possession, police said.
In its statement, Jammu and Kashmir Police alleged that Bhat was a former terrorist who had earlier been arrested in two separate cases. Police further claimed that he was allegedly functioning as a hybrid terrorist connected with a Hizbul Mujahideen module operating in the Handwara-Kupwara area.
A hybrid terrorist refers to individuals who are not regular members of militant groups, but allegedly carry out specific activities when directed by handlers.
Police said a case has been registered at Handwara Police Station under FIR No. 232 under relevant sections of law. Investigators are now examining the alleged network, looking into possible links and trying to identify other individuals who may be connected with the suspected module.
The latest operation comes amid continued security actions against militant networks and their support structures in North Kashmir. Security agencies have been conducting intelligence-based operations to identify and disrupt alleged terror infrastructure in the region.
