Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is facing a severe monsoon crisis as relentless rainfall continues to trigger landslides, flash floods and widespread damage across the state. According to the latest State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) report, 157 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while hundreds of roads remain blocked.

The situation has worsened with around 260 roads shut due to landslides and debris, affecting normal life in several districts.

Landslides And Flash Floods Claim Lives

The SEOC report, covering the period from June 30 to August 9, stated that 68 deaths occurred due to landslides and flash floods, while 89 people died in road accidents linked to monsoon conditions.

Around 257 people are reported missing, adding to concerns over the scale of the disaster.

Continuous rainfall has also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, with nearly 900 properties and public works affected. The estimated financial loss has reached around ₹886 crore.

IMD Issues Orange Alert In Five Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in five districts, warning that the situation may remain challenging in the coming days.

Authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas and advising residents to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone zones.

Power Supply Disrupted In Several Areas

The heavy rains have also impacted electricity infrastructure across Himachal Pradesh. Around 161 distribution transformers (DTRs) have stopped functioning for more than a week.

Mandi district has reported the highest disruption with 77 damaged transformers, followed by Shimla with 43 and Kullu with 40.

Rivers Swell As Flood Situation Intensifies

Rising water levels in rivers and streams have increased the risk of flash floods, particularly in areas like Kullu and surrounding regions.

Videos from affected areas show landslides bringing down huge amounts of debris, while floodwaters have damaged vehicles and temporary structures. With heavy rainfall continuing, Himachal Pradesh remains on high alert as rescue teams and local authorities work to manage the worsening monsoon emergency.
