India has officially embarked on a major upgrade in travel documentation
New Delhi: India has begun issuing a new generation of electronic passports aimed at improving security and easing international travel. Rolled out under the upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP 2.0), the e-passport features embedded electronic components that store biometric and personal data securely.
While the booklet looks similar to a conventional passport, it contains a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna embedded inside. This technology allows immigration authorities to verify identity more efficiently, especially at automated border gates.

The chip inside the e-passport securely stores the holder’s personal details along with biometric identifiers such as fingerprints and facial data. Encryption technology ensures that the digital information matches the printed details in the booklet, making it significantly harder to tamper with.
A small gold-coloured symbol on the cover distinguishes the e-passport from traditional versions. The enhanced security framework is designed to reduce identity fraud and speed up clearance processes at international airports.
Any Indian citizen who qualifies for a regular passport can apply for the e-passport. The eligibility criteria remain unchanged. However, the facility is currently available only at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) in major cities.
Authorities have indicated that the service will gradually expand nationwide.
