New Delhi: After a short spell of rain and gusty winds brought temporary relief to Delhi-NCR, the national capital is now preparing for a sharp rise in temperatures over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave-like conditions may return as dry winds and clear skies push temperatures beyond 40°C.

Rain And Strong Winds Bring Brief Relief

Several parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Greater Noida and the Palam area, witnessed late-evening showers and strong winds on Wednesday. Rainfall was also recorded at Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory on Thursday morning between 9 am and 10 am.

According to meteorologists, the weather system responsible for the rainfall is gradually moving towards Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. While cloudy skies may continue for the rest of the day, weather experts said the cooler conditions are unlikely to last long.

Temperatures Set To Rise Rapidly

Delhi had already recorded its highest maximum temperature of the month at 39°C earlier this week. Forecasters now expect the mercury to cross the 40°C mark between Friday and Sunday for the first time this season.

The IMD has predicted maximum temperatures between 40°C and 42°C next week, especially during the middle of the week when clear skies are expected to dominate.

Heatwave-Like Conditions Likely

Experts warned that strong and dry surface winds from Friday onwards could increase discomfort levels across the city. These winds may lead to heatwave-like conditions and raise the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours and take precautions against heat exhaustion as Delhi heads into one of its hottest phases of the season.
