Weather Update Today: Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Likely Across North, South and Northeast India; Assam, UP, Kerala on Watch

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in many regions.

New Delhi: The IMD has forecast another active monsoon day as well with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rains across several regions in the country. Heavy to very heavy showers are anticipated to lash many parts of North, East, West and South India. Meanwhile, the northeastern region will experience the heaviest rains.

As per the weather update, Assam and Meghalaya continue to be the two states receiving the most rainfall and there will be isolated areas with extremely heavy rainfalls. Arunachal Pradesh too will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

North and East India Under Alert for Heavy Rainfall

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is an alert for heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. There could be very heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

There would be heavy showers in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, which could result in waterlogging, traffic problems and poor visibility in some areas.

Heavy Showers to Occur in South & Western Parts of the Country

Monsoon showers are predicted in Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka along with its interior regions. Chhattisgarh and some areas of Madhya Pradesh are also predicted to receive heavy rains.

Lightning, thunderstorms and gale-force winds are predicted over Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Why is Monsoon So Active?

IMD explained that the active monsoon is mainly due to a powerful monsoon trough lying over northern parts of India, while there are also several cyclonic circulations over Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Bay of Bengal and South Interior Karnataka. All these weather systems are continuously absorbing moisture in order to generate rainfall.

The wet period will likely continue for some more days to come, though there may be variations in rain intensity from one place to another.
