New Delhi: On the occasion of Anti-Islamophobia Day at the United Nations, India stated that it strongly condemns any form of violence and hatred in the name of religion. India clarified that instead of specifically targeting any one religion, the rights and security of followers of all religions should be equally ensured.

Secularism and 'Sarva Dharma Samabhava' (Equality for All Religions)

India's Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, stated that India's philosophy of 'Sarva Dharma Samabhava' (Equality for All Religions) is based on equal respect for all religions. This philosophy inspires the secularism of our Constitution. He added that the politicization of religion only increases division and conflict, rather than solving problems.

Urging United Nations to uphold its original spirit

India urged the UN to maintain its credibility and impartiality and adopt an equal approach towards all religions. Harish stated that global public goods such as education, health, and security should be equally available to all.

Indirect Attack on a Neighboring Country

India, without naming any country, targeted Pakistan, saying that Pakistan has been fabricating stories in the name of Islamophobia. He said that atrocities against the Ahmadiyya community and the oppression of helpless Afghans continue in this country. Incidents of airstrikes during the holy month of Ramadan are also a matter of concern.

Situation of Muslims in India

Harish said that India is home to over 200 million Muslims, who are part of a peaceful and multicultural coexistence. India urged the UN to take strong action against all forms of religious hatred and discrimination and ensure equality, dignity, and the rule of law for all religions.

UN Chief's Appeal

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the need to take steps to combat discrimination and prejudice against Muslims worldwide. He said that hatred against Muslims threatens social cohesion and human rights and that effective action must be taken against it.
