Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday announced a significant expansion of the India-France strategic partnership following delegation-level talks in Mumbai.
Addressing a joint press briefing, the two leaders outlined a roadmap for deeper cooperation in defence, technology, clean energy and cultural exchange.
President Macron described the bilateral relationship as “remarkable and unique,” anchored in trust and long-term commitment. He said defence collaboration is set to grow further, spanning advanced fighter aircraft and submarine programmes.
“From Rafale jets to submarines, we are broadening our defence engagement,” Macron stated, underscoring France’s confidence in India as a trusted strategic partner.

The leaders agreed to elevate the partnership to what they termed a “Special Strategic Partnership,” signalling closer coordination in security and defence manufacturing. The move comes amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, with both nations emphasising stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the launch of the India-France Year of Innovation, describing it as a step toward making the partnership more people-centric. He stressed that collaboration in defence, clean energy, space and emerging technologies would connect industries, startups, MSMEs, researchers and students from both countries.
Among the key announcements were the establishment of the Indo-French Centre for AI in Health and the Indo-French Centre for Digital Science and Technology. A new National Centre of Excellence for Skilling in Aeronautics will also be set up to strengthen workforce capabilities in high-tech sectors.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, advanced materials and biotechnology. The leaders reiterated their shared commitment to trusted technologies and sustainable development through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

Reaffirming common democratic values and support for a multipolar world order, the two leaders called for reforms in global institutions. They also pledged joint efforts to combat terrorism and support peace initiatives globally.
On cultural ties, PM Modi announced that India will soon open the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in France, further strengthening people-to-people connections between the two nations.
