Designer of Statue of Unity, Ram Sutar Passes Away at 100
Noida: Renowned sculptor and creator of the Statue of Unity, Ram Vanji Sutar, passed away at the age of 100. He breathed his last at his residence in Noida late Wednesday night. Sutar, who had been battling age-related ailments for some time, passed away peacefully. His son, Anil Sutar, shared the news with the media on Thursday.
Ram Sutar was considered one of India's most distinguished sculptors. In his career spanning over six decades, he created numerous iconic sculptures of figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, Swami Vivekananda, and Chhatrapati Shivaji. His sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative pose and Chhatrapati Shivaji on horseback, both located in the Parliament complex, are among his masterpieces.

Ram Sutar gained global recognition as the designer of the 182-meter-tall 'Statue of Unity,' the world's tallest statue. This monument is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. Through this project, Sutar showcased India's glorious heritage and honored its national leaders on a global stage.
Ram Sutar was honored with several prestigious awards by the Government of India for his exceptional creativity. He received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016. He was also awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, the state's highest civilian honor. Sutar was also a gold medalist from the JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai.
