New Delhi: Amid the global energy crisis, news of a major relief has come to India. According to reports, Iran has allowed Indian-flagged tankers to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. This breakthrough came after talks between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Indian Tankers Passing Safely

Following this development, at least two Indian tankers, Pushpak and Parimal, are safely transiting this strategically important strait. However, other ships from the US, Europe, and Israel still face restrictions.

BJP leader Amit Malviya shared the news on the social media platform X, describing it as "India First."

Previously, an Indian-commanded ship arrived safely

Previously, a Liberian-flagged tanker carrying crude oil from Saudi Arabia and captained by an Indian arrived at Mumbai Port after transiting the Strait of Hormuz two days ago. This became the first Indian-commanded ship to safely transit this disputed strait.

Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is a 55-kilometer-wide strait between Iran and Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. It is a vital route for the global energy sector and one of the world's busiest and most strategically important shipping routes.

Approximately 13 million barrels of oil pass through this route daily, representing 31 percent of global oil exports. Traffic disruptions on this route affect major ports in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran.

Iran's Military Preparations

Iran's military can target the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding area with anti-ship cruise missiles, drones, fast attack craft, and naval mines. This has been demonstrated in the Iran-Iraq War and recent US attacks.

Experts say that disruption of oil and gas supplies along this route could have crippling effects on global financial markets, supply chains, and household budgets.

Relief for India

This move is particularly important for India as it ensures the country's energy security and reduces its dependence on oil supplies. Hopes for relief have now increased amid the global energy crisis.
