Isha Gramotsavam Receives National recognition
Chennai: India’s largest rural sports festival, created and run by Sadhguru, is now recognized by Fit India, the flagship initiative of the Government of India dedicated to promoting fitness as a lifestyle. Through live displays of sports and rural culture, Isha Gramotsav has emerged as a powerful vehicle for social change. It revives the spirit of rural life, weaning villagers out of addiction, breaking caste barriers and encouraging women to step out of their homes and enjoy sports.
Isha Gramotsav is a celebration of life in rural Tamil Nadu, showcasing a variety of rural sports, art, drama, dance, music and food with great gusto. The event marks the final stages of the state-level inter-village sports competition and highlights the role of sports in rural life. The festival is part of the rural revival program ‘Action for Rural Rejuvenation’ (ARR) under Isha Foundation, which has benefited more than 4600 villages and more than 42 lakh people so far.
The festival, which reaches thousands of players and hundreds of villages every year, has grown even bigger this time. This year 4000 villages and 40,000 players are participating in the event, making it the biggest platform for rural sports in Tamil Nadu. This time volleyball tournaments for men and throwball for women have been included along with Tamil Nadu’s traditional game of Kabaddi. The special thing is that Tamil Nadu’s Pro-Kabaddi team, Tamil Thalaivas, has proposed to play a friendly match with the winning Kabaddi team of Gramotsav, which is a great honor for the players.
40,000 Players are participating in event
The aim of Isha Gramotsav is to revive the spirit of enthusiasm and celebration through sports in rural India. Apart from this, it also presents rural culture through folk dance, art, drama and traditional food. Volleyball for men and throwball for women are the main sports in this festival, along with Kabaddi, Paralympics and other rural sports competitions are also organized.
Recently, the Sports Ministry of the Government of India has honored Isha Outreach with the “National Sports Promotion Award”. Apart from this, Isha Outreach has been recognized as the first NGO of Tamil Nadu under the “Khelo India” scheme.
Sadhguru has said that the civilization of India has given top priority to physical and mental health. Sports have been a part of our culture and it is the responsibility of every person to establish a sports culture in India.
