India’s diplomatic approach remains balanced, Rajnath added (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday indicated that India could play a constructive role in efforts to restore peace in West Asia, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate.
Responding to a question on India’s potential involvement, Singh said that the time may come when New Delhi actively contributes to resolving the crisis. He added that India’s diplomatic approach remains balanced and guided by dialogue.
Singh also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already urged both sides to de-escalate tensions and end hostilities. According to him, India’s foreign policy is rooted in maintaining stability and encouraging peaceful negotiations.
India has traditionally maintained strategic ties with both Iran and the United States, positioning itself as a potential neutral voice in the ongoing conflict.
The latest developments come after the second round of peace talks between Iran and the United States, reportedly scheduled in Pakistan, failed to make progress. The primary sticking point remains Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme, which continues to be a major source of disagreement between the two nations.
The breakdown of talks has raised concerns over further escalation in an already volatile region.
Amid rising tensions, US President Donald Trump announced a temporary extension of the ceasefire period by two weeks. The move is aimed at providing more time for diplomatic negotiations.

Trump stated that the decision followed requests from Pakistan’s leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to delay potential military action.
Iran, however, dismissed the extension as a tactical delay, accusing Washington of attempting to buy time for a possible surprise strike. Iranian officials warned that continued pressure could provoke a military response rather than negotiations.
The sharp exchange underscores the fragile nature of the situation and the urgent need for credible mediation.
