New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia students have called off their hunger strike after the university administration agreed to conduct Students’ Union elections by the last week of August 2027. The decision follows weeks of protests demanding the restoration of an elected student body, which has remained absent at the university since 2006.

In an official communication issued on Thursday, the administration set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for completing the drafting, approval and implementation of the Students’ Union constitution.

University Sets Timeline for Students’ Union Polls

According to the university’s announcement, elections will be held within six weeks of the commencement of the academic session, scheduled to begin on July 16, 2027.

The assurance came after the Registrar, Professor Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, met the protesting students and conveyed the administration’s commitment to a definite election schedule.

Students had been demanding a formal written order specifying deadlines for restoring the union. Earlier discussions failed to end the deadlock, as protesters maintained that verbal assurances were insufficient.

The proposed elections could mark the return of student representation at Jamia after nearly 20 years.

Disciplinary Proceedings Against Protesters to Be Withdrawn

The university has also agreed to revoke show-cause notices, disciplinary proceedings, rustications, suspensions and campus restrictions imposed in connection with the agitation.

The withdrawal of these measures was among the major demands raised by students during the protests.

The agitation had intensified in recent weeks, with demonstrations and hunger strikes staged near the administrative block. Security arrangements around campus gates were also tightened amid growing tensions.

Offline Classes to Resume From November 9

Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia will resume offline classes and examinations from Monday, November 9, following the Diwali break, Registrar Rizvi announced.

Academic activities had been shifted online amid the campus unrest, raising concerns among students, particularly those pursuing courses requiring practical sessions and fieldwork.

With the hunger strike called off and the administration issuing a formal timeline, attention now shifts to implementing the commitments and ensuring that the long-awaited Students’ Union elections take place as scheduled.
