J&K: Pakistan again violates ceasefire at LoC for 9th straight night

Srinagar: There was no let-up in exchange of firing between Indian and Pakistan armies along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir for the ninth consecutive night on Friday.

The Army said the latest ceasefire violation happened across the LoC opposite the Kupwara, Uri in Kashmir and Akhnoor sector of Jammu region.

During the night of May 2, Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small‑arms fire across the Line of Control opposite the Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor areas,” The Army said.

These were responded promptly and proportionately by the Army.

Earlier Violations

Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire for 8th time by resorting to unprovoked small arms firing along the Line of Control in five districts.

'During the night of May 1-2, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms firing from posts across the Line of Control opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Naushera in Rajouri and Akhnoor in Jammu districts of the Union Territory,' Defence spokesman said on Friday.

"Indian Army troops responded in a calibrated and proportionate manner," he said.

The Pakistan Army carried out unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor sectors in Jammu and Kashmir, violating ceasefire for the seventh consecutive night on Wednesday.

The Army responded with equal force to the Pak Army firing from across the border.

The ceasefire violations are happening despite Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan reportedly spoke on hotline on Tuesday.

The frequent ceasefire violations over the last week threatens the February 2021 ceasefire agreement along the 740 km long LoC between the two countries.

Violation From April 24–25

The latest cycle of ceasefire violations began on the night of April 24–25 in the Nowgam sector of Kupwara district and steadily intensified over the following days.

On April 25–26, Pakistani troops opened fire across multiple sectors along the Kashmir LoC.

The violations escalated further between April 26–27, with Indian positions targeted opposite Tutmari Gali in Nowgam and Rampur in the Boniyar Uri area of Baramulla.

Backgrounder

The ceasefire violations along the LoC have been on the rise since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including 25 tourists. The latest cycle of ceasefire violations began on the night of April 24–25 in the Kupwara district and steadily intensified over the following days across various sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.

The escalating border tensions threaten the 2021 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan on the LoC.
