New Delhi: Ramsaran Nautiyal, father of Bollywood singer Jubin Nautiyal, joined the Congress on Monday, days after resigning from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His return marks a comeback to the party he left in 2014, ahead of the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections.

Nautiyal’s decision follows his remarks suggesting that a lack of respect was a key reason behind his departure from the BJP. His resignation had also triggered a brief exchange between him and the BJP leadership over whether the party had formally received his letter.

Resignation Row Preceded Congress Return

Explaining the circumstances surrounding his resignation, Nautiyal had said, “I have resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party. If the BJP president has said that the resignation has not been received, that is possible because I did not go personally to submit it. I sent my stenographer to the office.”

He later clarified that he had emailed his resignation to Uttarakhand BJP president Mahendra Bhatt after reports emerged that the party had not received the letter.

The BJP had maintained that it had not received his resignation, leading to a brief dispute over the formal submission of the document.

‘Respect’ Was Key to Leaving BJP

Nautiyal had said that a person associated with an organisation for 10 to 12 years would not leave without a reason. He emphasised that respect was central to his decision to walk away from the BJP.

“But when a person leaves their place, the main reason should be respected. And if respect is not given, then one will distance oneself. That is what I say,” he had said.

He had also indicated that Mahendra Bhatt would be in a position to explain the reasons behind his departure.

Uttarakhand Congress Welcomes His Return

Uttarakhand Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal welcomed Nautiyal’s induction, saying his entry would strengthen the party.

“He has joined the party, and his joining will strengthen it,” Godiyal said.

Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand, Yashpal Arya, described Nautiyal’s return as a homecoming, pointing to his longstanding association with the Congress and his previous organisational roles.

“Ramsharan Nautiyal has traditionally been aligned with the Congress ideology and has played an important role in the party over the past several decades. He has served as the former chairman of the Dehradun District Panchayat and held the responsibilities of general secretary and vice president in the Uttarakhand Congress. His return to the party is certainly a homecoming, and this is a welcome occasion,” Arya said.

Nautiyal’s return comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, adding a fresh development to the state’s political landscape.
