Kisan Diwas 2025 Focuses on FPOs and Farmer Welfare Initiatives
New Delhi: Kisan Diwas also known as National Farmers' Day, is celebrated every year across the country to honor the invaluable contributions of farmers. This day also commemorates the birth anniversary of India's fifth Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh, who dedicated his life to the rights of farmers and land reforms. The government officially declared December 23rd as National Farmers' Day in 2001.
The theme for Farmers' Day 2025 is “Developed India 2047 – The Role of FPOs in the Globalization of Indian Agriculture.” This year, the focus is on making Indian agriculture globally competitive with the help of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and modern technology. The discussions center around increasing farmers' income, strengthening market access, and promoting innovation in the agricultural sector.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN) is a flagship scheme of the central government. Under this scheme, all eligible farmer families receive financial assistance of ₹6,000 annually. This amount is transferred directly to the farmers' bank accounts in three equal installments, helping them with their farming expenses.
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) protects farmers against losses due to natural calamities, pests, and diseases. Under this scheme, farmers have to pay a very low premium – 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for horticultural crops.
The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme provides farmers with timely credit at affordable rates. Under this scheme, farmers can avail loans up to ₹3 lakh at an effective interest rate of 4%, making it easier for them to meet their needs for seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs.
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) aims to increase water use efficiency based on the principle of "more crop per drop." Subsidies are provided under this scheme for micro-irrigation systems like drip and sprinkler irrigation.

The e-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) is a digital platform that connects APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) mandis, helping farmers get better and more transparent prices for their produce.
Provides farmers with soil testing reports and customised fertiliser recommendations to improve soil fertility and crop productivity.
The Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana promotes organic farming, while the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund (AIF) provides affordable loans for the construction of facilities such as storage, cold storage, and warehouses.
Offers medium to long-term financing with interest subsidy for building post-harvest infrastructure such as warehouses and cold storages.
Supports installation of solar-powered irrigation pumps and allows farmers to sell surplus electricity to power distribution companies.
