New Delhi: Maha Shivratri, one of the most sacred festivals in Hinduism, is observed annually in the month of Phalguna on the Chaturdashi tithi of Krishna Paksha.

The festival holds immense spiritual significance as it marks the manifestation of Lord Shiva and is also believed to be the divine wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Devotees observe fasts, chant sacred mantras, and remain awake throughout the night, believing that sincere worship on this occasion brings peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.

Maha Shivratri 2026: Auspicious Puja Timings

Worshipping Lord Shiva during the four Prahars of the night is considered especially rewarding.

  • First Prahar: 6:11 PM to 9:23 PM (Feb 15)
  • Second Prahar: 9:23 PM (Feb 15) to 12:35 AM (Feb 16)
  • Third Prahar: 12:35 AM to 3:47 AM (Feb 16)
  • Fourth Prahar: 3:47 AM to 6:59 AM (Feb 16)

The most auspicious time, Nishith Kaal, falls between 12:09 AM and 1:01 AM on February 16.

Maha Shivratri Puja Vidhi (Worship Method)

Devotees perform Rudrabhishek of the Shiva Lingam during all four Prahars. The Lingam is bathed with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), followed by water infused with saffron. Offerings include Bel leaves, datura, bhang, fruits, and sweets. A lamp is kept lit throughout the night, and sandalwood paste is applied.

Chanting sacred mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Om Namo Bhagavate Rudraya”, reciting the Shiva Purana, and observing night-long vigil are considered highly auspicious.

Special Remedies for Maha Shivratri

Performing Shivratri puja at a Shiva temple and lighting a pure ghee lamp near the Shiva Lingam is believed to remove financial obstacles.

Devotees without a Shiva Lingam at home may install one on this day after proper rituals, which is believed to bring prosperity, happiness, and relief from hardships.
