Kolkata: Former WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s efforts to bring opposition parties together against the BJP at the national level appear to face challenges within her own state, where the Congress and CPM remain cautious about any political understanding with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
While Mamata Banerjee has recently reached out to opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and CPM general secretary M A Baby, leaders of both parties in West Bengal have maintained distance from any direct alliance with TMC.
Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the INDIA Bloc meeting in New Delhi where opposition parties are likely to discuss strategies against BJP. However, the political equations in West Bengal remain different, with the Congress and CPM continuing their separate opposition to both BJP and TMC in the state.
The two parties have supported broader opposition coordination on national issues, but have indicated that such cooperation does not automatically translate into an electoral alliance with Mamata Banerjee’s party in Bengal.
West Bengal CPM state secretary Mohammad Salim said the party’s national leadership had contacted several opposition parties, including TMC, over issues concerning the Election Commission and other political matters. However, he clarified that such communication should not be viewed as an alliance or electoral arrangement between CPM and Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.
The CPM has maintained its criticism of both BJP and TMC while attempting to rebuild its political presence in the state.
The Congress in West Bengal has also remained cautious about any closer association with the TMC. Despite discussions between national opposition leaders, the state-level Congress leadership has focused on strengthening a broader anti-BJP campaign without committing to a direct partnership with Mamata Banerjee’s party in the state.
BJP leader and West Bengal opposition figure Suvendu Adhikari criticised Mamata Banerjee’s outreach efforts, accusing her of changing political positions according to circumstances. Adhikari highlighted Mamata’s political journey, including her separation from the Congress, her long-standing opposition to the Left Front government, and her rise to power in West Bengal in 2011.
CPM which governed West Bengal for 34 years before losing power to TMC in 2011, remains concerned about losing the political space it has been trying to regain . The party has continued to oppose BJP policies while also targeting Mamata Banerjee’s government, making any direct political understanding between the two parties difficult.
As opposition parties attempt to coordinate nationally, West Bengal remains a major test of whether broader anti-BJP unity can overcome deep-rooted state-level political rivalries.
