New Delhi: Authorities in Manipur have suspended internet and mobile data services in five districts for three days following widespread unrest triggered by the death of two children in a suspected rocket attack. The restrictions came into immediate effect in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts.

Officials said the move was aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation and maintaining law and order as protests intensified across affected areas.

Fatal Attack Triggers Outrage

The violence stems from a suspected projectile strike on a house in Bishnupur district in the early hours of Tuesday. The explosion killed a five-month-old girl and a five-year-old boy, while their mother sustained injuries.

The victims were rushed to a hospital in Imphal, where the children succumbed to their injuries. The attack reportedly occurred while the family was asleep, amplifying public anger and grief.

Protests Turn Violent

Large-scale protests broke out soon after news of the incident spread. Demonstrators blocked roads, set fire to tyres, and torched fuel tankers in parts of Bishnupur. In some areas, protesters attempted to storm a security camp, escalating tensions further.

Residents reported hearing a loud explosion at around 1 am, followed by panic in nearby localities. The affected village lies close to sensitive hill regions, which have witnessed sporadic violence in the past.

Security forces have significantly increased deployment across vulnerable zones, with search operations launched in adjoining hill areas. Surveillance has also been intensified to track down those responsible.

A senior state minister condemned the attack, calling it a “barbaric act” and assured that strict action would be taken against the perpetrators. Authorities also confirmed the recovery of another explosive device near the site, raising concerns about further threats.

Region’s Fragile Security Situation

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Manipur, which has witnessed periodic ethnic violence and militant activity. The affected village had earlier seen a similar attack in 2024, underlining its vulnerability.

Officials said the situation remains under close watch, with preventive measures in place to avoid further escalation.
