New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed intense political drama when Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s microphone was switched off by Speaker Om Birla during a charged debate on national security and China. Akhilesh had stood up in support of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who was speaking during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.

Akhilesh argued that the issue of China was extremely sensitive and directly linked to national security. He stressed that if the matter concerns the country’s safety, Rahul Gandhi should be allowed to read and present his points fully in Parliament.

Speaker’s Intervention and Akhilesh’s Stand

As Akhilesh continued speaking, Speaker Om Birla intervened and asked him to maintain order. Despite this, Akhilesh rose again from his seat and invoked the legacy of senior socialist leaders like Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, George Fernandes, and Mulayam Singh Yadav. He recalled how these leaders consistently warned the nation to remain cautious about China.

Akhilesh said that India had already lost land to China in the past and that ignoring such warnings could be dangerous. He strongly asserted that open discussion on issues like national security and international relations is a basic requirement of democracy, and the opposition must be heard to present facts and alternative viewpoints before the nation.

During this exchange, Akhilesh Yadav’s microphone was turned off, even as voices of other leaders in the House remained audible, triggering further controversy.

Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks on Doklam

The uproar followed Rahul Gandhi’s speech in which he referred to an article citing former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s memoir. Rahul claimed that Chinese tanks had moved close to Indian territory in the Doklam region, reportedly coming within a few hundred metres of Indian positions.

He urged Members of Parliament to listen carefully to what he was reading, saying it would reveal who truly stood for patriotism. According to Rahul, four Chinese tanks had approached Indian land in Doklam, raising serious security concerns.

Government Pushback and Prolonged Uproar

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh objected strongly, questioning whether the book Rahul quoted had been officially published. He accused Rahul of misleading the House. Speaker Om Birla repeatedly asked Rahul to place the book on the table of the House, citing parliamentary rules.

Senior ministers including Amit Shah, Kiren Rijiju, and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also opposed Rahul’s remarks. The disagreement escalated into nearly 46 minutes of continuous disruption, with repeated interruptions and objections.

The Controversy Around the Book

The memoir in question, “Four Stars of Destiny” by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, has not yet received official clearance for publication. While pre-orders and listings have appeared online, the book is still awaiting approval from the Defence Ministry, making its contents a point of political contention.
