New Delhi: In a world where late-night scrolling, stressful work schedules and irregular routines have become common, getting quality sleep has become a challenge for millions of people. Now, a simple bedtime formula called the 10-3-2-1-0 sleep rule is gaining attention as a possible solution for better rest.
The method is based on changing a few habits before going to bed to help the body and brain prepare for sleep.
The formula breaks down into five simple steps:

The rule suggests avoiding coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks around 10 hours before bedtime. Caffeine can remain active in the body for several hours and may affect the ability to fall asleep, especially for people who are sensitive to it.
The next step recommends avoiding heavy meals and alcohol about three hours before sleeping. Eating too close to bedtime may cause digestive discomfort and disturb sleep quality.
The rule advises ending professional work or mentally stressful activities two hours before going to bed. This gives the brain time to relax and move away from work-related thoughts.
The “1” stands for stopping screen usage including smartphones, laptops and tablets about one hour before sleeping. Blue light from screens may interfere with the body’s natural sleep cycle by affecting melatonin production, the hormone responsible for sleep regulation.

The final step means avoiding repeated alarm snoozes in the morning. Waking up consistently may help maintain a healthy sleep schedule.
While the formula itself is not a medical treatment, many of its principles match commonly recommended sleep hygiene practices.
Maintaining a fixed sleep schedule, reducing caffeine intake, limiting screen exposure and creating a relaxing bedtime routine are often suggested by sleep experts for improving sleep quality.
