Microsoft launches Hyderabad cloud region, its fourth in India, to boost AI infrastructure and digital transformation (Img: pinterest)
New Delhi: Microsoft on Monday formally launched its fourth India cloud region in Hyderabad as part of its USD 20.5 billion investment commitment towards strengthening the country’s digital and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The India South Central region, which became generally available on August 6, joins Microsoft’s existing cloud regions in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai.
The Hyderabad facility has been designed with sustainability in mind and uses effectively zero water for cooling. Instead of traditional water-based cooling systems, the facility relies on air-cooled chillers, Microsoft India and South Asia President Puneet Chandok said.
He highlighted that India currently has around 2 GW of data centre capacity, which is expected to increase to 6-7 GW by 2025. More than USD 100 billion in investments have already been committed to the sector.
Chandok said India has the potential to become an AI infrastructure hub not only for domestic requirements but also for Asia and the wider Global South.
In a video message, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said the new cloud region would provide organisations in India and across Asia with increased capacity, improved resilience and greater choice.
The expansion comes at a time when India’s digital ecosystem is witnessing rapid growth. According to data from research firm IDC, India’s public cloud services spending is projected to reach USD 45.7 billion by 2030.
The sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 22.2 per cent, while artificial intelligence spending is likely to expand at nearly double that pace, reflecting the growing demand for advanced digital infrastructure.
