Night Disaster in Mumbai; 7 Dead After Massive Landslide in Ghatkopar-Kurla, Rescue Ops Underway

Mumbai: A major tragedy has occurred in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, due to heavy rainfall. Panic ensued following a landslide in the Ghatkopar-Kurla area last night.

So far, the bodies of seven people have been recovered in this incident, while several others are feared trapped under the debris. Administration and rescue teams are on-site, and relief operations are proceeding on a war footing.

When and where did the incident occur?

The incident took place between 3:00 AM and 3:48 AM on Wednesday. The landslide occurred at the Gaushia Chawl in Chirag Nagar (near Rathod Medical) in Kurla and in the Ashoknagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police station. Due to the darkness of the night and the rain, residents had no time to react, and several houses were engulfed by the debris.

Confirming the incident, DCP Ganesh Shinde stated that the landslide in the Ashoknagar area—under the Ghatkopar police's jurisdiction—was caused by continuous rainfall.

The incident occurred around 3:00 AM. So far, two bodies have been recovered, and the rescue operation is in full swing. He added that personnel from the police, BMC, NDRF, and other agencies have been deployed to bring the situation under control and rescue the victims. Initially, it was reported that 4–5 people were trapped.

Rescue operation underway

According to the latest information provided by the BMC, 6 to 8 people were feared trapped under the debris. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, 108 ambulance service, NDRF, and ward staff are present at the site and are conducting a joint rescue operation.

Two people have reportedly been injured in the incident; they have been identified as 18-year-old Sohail Ansari and 14-year-old Mohammad Ansari. Meanwhile, the two recovered bodies have been sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examinations and other formalities. The administration is making every effort to clear the debris and safely rescue the trapped people.
