Mumbai: Mumbai Police is strengthening its canine unit with the induction of six Belgian Malinois dogs, a breed internationally recognised for its role in high-risk military and security operations, including the US Navy SEAL raid that killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011.
The latest induction is part of the force's efforts to enhance explosive detection, VIP protection and security arrangements at major public gatherings. Mumbai Police is also considering a gradual shift towards retaining Belgian Malinois as its principal canine breed, given their agility, endurance and ability to undertake demanding field assignments.
The force had first introduced five Belgian Malinois puppies into its dog squad in 2019, when Labradors and Dobermanns formed a significant part of its canine strength. The addition of six more dogs marks a further expansion of the breed's presence in the city's security apparatus.
According to police officials, the Belgian Malinois is particularly suited to operations requiring sustained searches and rapid responses to commands. The dogs can be deployed to inspect venues, luggage and open spaces for explosives before the arrival of dignitaries or the commencement of large public events.
Of the six recently procured dogs, one has completed its specialised training and joined the Mumbai Police squad. The remaining five are undergoing training at the Dog Training Centre in Shivajinagar, Pune, alongside two Labradors. A senior police officer said the force intends to increase the number of Belgian Malinois in the coming years, particularly for explosive-detection duties and VIP security.
