Mamata Banerjee’s next electoral move becomes Bengal’s biggest political question
New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced by-elections for six constituencies across Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, setting the stage for a fresh political contest on October 6. The counting of votes will take place on October 9.
While the bypolls cover multiple states, the biggest attention is expected to remain on West Bengal, where Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s electoral plans have become the centre of political speculation.
The key question dominating Bengal’s political circles is whether Mamata Banerjee will contest the upcoming bypoll from either Rajinagar or Nandigram.
The West Bengal bypolls have gained importance because of the political significance attached to the vacant seats. The Rajinagar constituency has emerged as one possible option for Mamata Banerjee, while Nandigram has attracted attention after being vacated by Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari following his victory from Banerjee’s former political stronghold, Bhabanipur. The possibility of Mamata entering the electoral contest has created fresh speculation over the TMC’s strategy and the Opposition’s response.
Nandigram holds special importance in West Bengal politics as it was the seat where Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari faced a high-profile electoral battle.
The constituency has remained a symbol of political rivalry between the TMC and BJP, making any possible contest from Nandigram a major political event.
A decision by Mamata Banerjee to contest from the seat could once again turn it into one of the most closely watched political battles in the country.
According to the Election Commission announcement, bypolls will be conducted for five assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat. Tamil Nadu will witness elections in two assembly constituencies: Maduranthakam and Dharapuram.
The Maduranthakam seat fell vacant following the resignation of the newly elected member, while the Dharapuram constituency also became vacant after the resignation of its newly elected representative. Puducherry’s Thattanchavady assembly constituency will also go to polls following the resignation of the newly elected member.
Apart from assembly constituencies, Assam will witness a Lok Sabha by-election from Nagaon. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi, leading to another important electoral contest in the northeastern state. The bypoll will test political equations in Assam and provide an opportunity for parties to strengthen their position ahead of future electoral battles.
Bypolls often become a test of political strength and public sentiment, especially when prominent leaders and strategically important constituencies are involved.
For the TMC, the West Bengal contest will be closely watched as the party seeks to maintain its dominance in the state. For the BJP and other opposition parties, the bypolls provide an opportunity to challenge the ruling party’s political position.
