New Delhi: The Union Cabinet also approved the four-laning of 82.57 km Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa stretch of National Highway-22 in Bihar at a capital cost of Rs 3,590.73 crore, with the project expected to boost connectivity with the India-Nepal border, ease traffic congestion and strengthen regional economic activity.
Briefing newsmen after the Cabinet meeting, Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the highway would be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). The project will provide a vital four-lane link between Sonbarsa near the India-Nepal border and Muzaffarpur, where the corridor connects with NH-27, part of the East-West Corridor.
The government said the upgraded route would improve the movement of passengers and freight between northern Bihar and major economic centres in the state.
The four-laning is expected to address congestion in heavily populated areas along the corridor, including Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni, Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra and Sonbarsa. It is also expected to reduce journey times, improve average travel speeds and make road transportation safer and more efficient.
The highway has been designed for a maximum speed of 100 kmph and an average speed of 80 kmph.
