New Delhi: The government has proposed changes in the Motor Vehicle Act, under which the driving license (DL) will remain valid for 30 days even after its expiry. This means if your license has expired, you won't be in trouble right away — you'll have 30 days to renew it.

The change is part of the Public Trust (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which has been introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Why a 30-day grace period?

Till now, as soon as the license expired, it became illegal, due to which people had to face fines or legal action. According to the new proposal, there will be a grace period of 30 days, due to which people will get relief and will not have to worry in a hurry.

Change in renewal rules

If you renew the license after it expires, it will now be applicable from the date of renewal and not from the expiry date. This will provide more clarity and convenience to the people.

Big relief in vehicle registration

The government has also proposed that now vehicle registration can be done anywhere in the state; earlier it was limited to a certain area. This will provide great convenience to people, especially those who frequently change locations.

Increase in deadline

The deadline for many important works has also been extended:

  • Notice for cancellation of vehicle registration: increased from 14 days to 30 days
  • Insurance transfer notice: increased from 14 days to 30 days
  • This will give people more time to complete the procedures.

Provision of penalty instead of fine

The government has proposed to impose 'penalty' instead of 'fine' in many cases. The difference is that

  • A fine is imposed by the court.
  • A penalty can be imposed by the administrative officer.
  • This will make the process faster and easier.

Strictness in hit-and-run cases

A fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh can be imposed for breaking the rules in hit-and-run cases. This step has been taken to provide better justice and protection to the victims.

Why the big change?

This bill is not limited to just the Motor Vehicle Act. It is proposed to change a total of 79 laws, in which 717 provisions will be decriminalized. Its purpose is

  • making people's lives easier
  • promote business
  • Simplifying legal processes

This step of the government can bring great relief to the common people. 30-day grace period, easy renewal, and fewer legal hassles—all these changes are important steps towards making people's everyday lives easier.
