New Delhi: Opposition parties have intensified their criticism of the Indian government over the proposed India–U.S. trade deal, questioning its fairness and long-term impact. On Saturday, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav raised sharp questions, accusing the BJP-led government of failing to explain whether the deal genuinely protects India’s interests. He stressed that no international agreement should ever be one-sided and demanded clarity from the government.

‘No Deal Is Ever One-Sided,’ Says Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav took to social media platform X to express public concern, stating that the people of India are asking the BJP an important question: trade deals are never unilateral. He questioned whether the government understands the basics of negotiation, hinting that the deal may disproportionately favor the United States while leaving India vulnerable.

‘18 Equals Zero?’ A Political Swipe at BJP

In a symbolic attack, Akhilesh used the phrase “Is zero bigger than eighteen?” to criticize the government’s approach. He suggested that the BJP’s “deal mathematics” appears flawed, implying that meaningful benefits for India may be missing or reduced to nothing. This remark quickly gained attention as a political metaphor questioning whether India has secured anything substantial in return.

Concerns Over Farmers, Traders, and Industries

The SP chief expressed serious concern over the future of Indian farmers, shopkeepers, and industries. He asked whether the government has any concrete protection plan beyond hollow assurances. According to him, without strong safeguards, Indian agriculture and small businesses could suffer under an imbalanced trade agreement that opens markets without adequate domestic support.

Questions on National Interest and Economic Security

Akhilesh Yadav also questioned what he described as the “hidden compulsion” behind surrendering India’s economic interests. He demanded transparency, asking whether the deal serves India equally or is designed to benefit only one side. He warned that neglecting economic security could weaken the country’s long-term stability.

‘Made There, Delivered Here?’

Using the phrase “made there, delivered here,” Akhilesh suggested that the deal might already be finalized abroad, leaving India with no choice but to sign. He questioned whether the BJP government is merely being asked to sign on a dotted line, without meaningful negotiation or public accountability.

Call for Clarity and Accountability

The SP leader concluded by demanding that the government clearly explain whether India’s interests—especially those of farmers and small industries—are protected. He emphasized that uncertainty surrounding such deals only increases fear among the public and urged the government to come clean about the true terms of the agreement.
