Parliament Stalemate Continues: Government Unwilling to Accept Opposition Demands

For the 14th day today, the Parliament remained paralysed without any debate or discussions. There are no indications of any break through, with the Government seem to be unwilling to accept the Opposition's demands. At the same time, the Opposition is also not showing of any signs of rapproachment.

New Delhi: The Opposition continued its protest in Parliament on Thursday, keeping the alleged donation embezzlement at Ram Temple and police action during the July 20 students protest at Jantar Mantar at the centre of its attack on the Government. All Opposition parties led by Congress have been raising both issues since the Monsoon session began on July 20, demanding answers from the Narendra Modi government.

Since the Monsoon session began, the Lok Sabha has not completed a single Question Hour owing to frequent disruptions, while five Bills have been passed without discussion. With the Opposition showing no signs of backing down, Thrusday's proceedings remained a face-off between the government and opposition.

Today also within 15 minutes, the Lok sabha was adjourned till 2 pm and later for the day after the Taxation Amendment Bill tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman was passed.

On the other hand, the Rajya Sabha witnessed angry Opposition members shouting slogans against the government, even though Chairman CP Radhakrishnan tried to run the House. The House witnessed three adjournments during the day before it was adjourned for the day. Finance Minister Sitaraman managed to get passed the Appropriation Bill.

Though the government yesterday initiated a dialogue with Opposition, no breakthrough could be seen as the government did not seem willing to accept the basic demands of the Opposition. A statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on police action on students during the July 20 Chalo Sansad march and a debate in the House on the donation theft of Ram Temple in Ayodhya were the two non-negotiable demands, which were rejected by the Opposition.

With just five working days left for the Parliament to adjourn, the government is sending signals of bringing important legislations like the Delimitation Bill and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Bill. Though the Opposition vehemently opposed the Delimitation Bill, it asked the Centre to make amendments in the present FCRA Bill, so that it could be passed during the current Session.
