PM Modi Speaks in Parliament on West Asia Conflict
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the government's position in detail in the Lok Sabha regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He said that over the past two to three weeks, the Foreign Minister and the Petroleum Minister have also briefed the House on the situation. This crisis is impacting the global economy and the lives of ordinary people, and the entire world is calling for a speedy resolution.
The Prime Minister stated that this conflict has posed three challenges for India: economic, national security, and humanitarian. West Asia is a vital hub for trade and energy supplies for India, which further increases India's concerns.
PM Modi stated that approximately 10 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries. Furthermore, a large number of Indian crew members are involved in maritime trade. He stated that, therefore, the safety of Indians is the government's top priority, and constant contact is maintained with all affected countries in this regard.
The Prime Minister stated that more than 375,000 Indians have returned safely to their homeland since the war began. Nearly 1,000 Indians have been evacuated from Iran, including over 700 medical students. The government has established a 24x7 control room and helpline, while Indian missions are continuously issuing advisories.
PM Modi stated that a large portion of India's energy needs are met through the Strait of Hormuz, where the current situation has disrupted shipping. The government is making continuous efforts to maintain the supply of petrol, diesel, and gas and is also working on alternative sources.
The Prime Minister stated that India previously imported oil from 27 countries, which has now increased to 41. The country has a strategic oil reserve of 5.3 million metric tons, and plans are underway to increase this to 6.5 million metric tons. Refining capacity has also increased over the years.
PM Modi also mentioned increasing ethanol blending to 20% and electrification of railways. He said this has reduced oil consumption. He also talked about promoting nano urea and organic farming for farmers.
The Prime Minister informed that the government has formed an inter-ministerial group, which is meeting daily to review issues related to import, export, and supply. He assured that the government is providing necessary support to every sector and will take every possible step to ensure the country's energy and economic security in the future.
