TMC Leader and Former Deputy Speaker Ashis Banerjee Found Dead At Party Office, Police Found a Suicide Letter
Former Bengal deputy speaker and TMC leader Ashis Banerjee was found dead at a party office in Birbhum. Police recovered a purported suicide note and are investigating.
Kolkata: Former West Bengal Assembly deputy speaker and TMC leader Ashis Banerjee died at a TMC office near his home in Rampurhat, Birbhum, on Sunday morning, police said.
"A purported suicide letter was found at the party office," police said, adding Banerjee's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and its precise circumstances are under investigation.
Banerjee was a senior TMC leader and a five-time MLA from Rampurhat for the party. He represented the constituency uninterruptedly from 2001 till 2026.
He had been deputy speaker of the West Bengal Assembly during the TMC government's previous term. He had also served as a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government and handled the school education and agriculture portfolios.
In June this year, Banerjee had resigned as chairman of the TMC's Birbhum district core committee. His decision came weeks after the party's heavy losses to the BJP in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
