PM Modi’s Swadeshi Push After India’s Economy Records 7.8% Growth
New Delhi: India’s strong economic performance has been followed by a renewed push from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen the country’s self-reliance movement. After the economy expanded by an impressive 7.8% in the April-June quarter, the Prime Minister called on citizens to embrace Swadeshi values and make choices that contribute to India’s long-term economic growth.
Highlighting the country’s resilience amid global uncertainty, geopolitical tensions and disrupted international supply chains, PM Modi said India’s growth momentum reflects the determination, hard work and collective strength of its citizens. He emphasised that the nation achieved this milestone despite challenges affecting several major economies around the world.
The latest GDP numbers have positioned India among the fastest-growing major economies, with strong domestic demand, policy continuity and economic resilience supporting growth. However, alongside celebrating the achievement, the Prime Minister shifted focus towards the role of individual choices in strengthening the nation’s economic foundation.
Reiterating the Vocal for Local campaign, PM Modi urged citizens to prioritise Indian-made products and services over imported alternatives. He stressed that increased demand for domestic goods can benefit manufacturers, small businesses, startups, artisans and local entrepreneurs.
The Swadeshi push is part of the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign supply chains and creating more employment opportunities within India.
The Prime Minister said that every purchase decision can contribute to India’s economic progress, encouraging people to support local industries and Indian brands as the country moves towards its development goals.
One of the key highlights of PM Modi’s message was his appeal against unnecessary foreign travel and overseas destination weddings. Promoting the idea of “Wed in India”, he encouraged families to organise wedding celebrations within the country and support India’s tourism, hospitality and event management sectors.
The push comes at a time when India is strengthening its domestic tourism ecosystem and promoting local destinations as alternatives to international wedding locations.
From luxury resorts to heritage venues, the government believes that choosing Indian locations for major events can generate business opportunities for local communities and industries.
PM Modi also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary gold purchases. India is one of the world’s largest consumers of gold, and imports of the precious metal have a direct impact on foreign exchange outflow.
The appeal is aimed at encouraging responsible spending and reducing economic pressure during periods of global financial uncertainty. The move also aligns with efforts to strengthen domestic financial stability.
The Prime Minister’s latest appeal comes against the backdrop of rising global challenges, including geopolitical conflicts, inflationary pressures and disruptions in international trade networks.
Earlier, PM Modi had encouraged citizens to adopt measures such as reducing fuel consumption, using public transport, considering electric vehicles and supporting Indian products to help the economy navigate uncertain global conditions.
Linking the Swadeshi movement with India’s future growth ambitions, PM Modi highlighted the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, when the country completes 100 years of independence.
He said that the combined efforts of citizens, businesses and policymakers will determine India’s economic journey in the coming decades. The message reflects the government’s broader strategy of transforming domestic consumption into a driver of economic growth.
As India continues to expand its global economic presence, the renewed Swadeshi push has placed everyday lifestyle decisions, from shopping choices to travel plans and celebrations, at the centre of the country’s development debate.
