Poonam Pandey sacked from Luv Kush Ramlila; VHP welcomes decision

New Delhi: The Luv Kush Ramlila, held annually at Delhi's iconic Red Fort grounds, was embroiled in controversy this year. The controversy stemmed from the announcement of actress Poonam Pandey's inclusion in the Ramlila.

As soon as her name appeared on the cast list, there was strong opposition from Hindu organizations and several social groups.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad's protest and response

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had demanded Poonam Pandey's removal from the Ramlila. The organization clarified that Poonam Pandey's image and her past actions were against the religious decorum of Ramlila and Indian cultural values.

The VHP issued a press release on the matter, stating, "Respecting the sentiments of society and revered saints, the decision of the Luv Kush Ramlila Committee not to invite Poonam Pandey is welcome."

The organization also added, "There should be no place for obscenity in religious events. It is essential to maintain decorum on a sacred platform like Ramlila."

Decision of the Luv Kush Ramlila Committee

Although the committee initially stood by its decision despite opposition, the committee ultimately decided to remove Poonam Pandey from the program due to growing pressure and public sentiment. The committee stated that this decision was taken to protect cultural dignity and traditions.

This year's Luv Kush Ramlila will be held from September 22nd to October 3rd. Several prominent faces have been cast in this grand event:

• Sita's role—Rini Arya
• Ravana's role—Bollywood actor Arya Babbar
• Parshuram's role—BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

VHP State Minister Surendra Gupta expressed hope that this year's Ramlila will be grander, more inspiring, and more upholding of decorum than ever before.
