Pune Weather Today: Will cloudy skies and afternoon showers clear the air today, or is pollution still lurking?

Pune: Pune residents are waking up to a cloudy Thursday morning, with temperatures hovering around 28°C, humidity at 64%, and winds at 13 km/h. The meteorological department predicts afternoon showers, which could temporarily improve air quality by clearing fine particulate matter. By nightfall, clouds are expected to increase further with temperatures dipping to 18°C. While these showers may provide a brief respite, experts warn that pockets of haze could linger, especially near congested traffic zones and industrial areas.

The city’s 10-day forecast shows mostly cloudy to partly sunny conditions, with intermittent light rain until Saturday. Though rain can temporarily wash away pollutants, the combination of cooler temperatures, reduced wind, and increased domestic or vehicular emissions as winter sets in may offset the benefits.

Festive Fallout: Did Diwali Affect Pune’s Air?

Recent Diwali celebrations temporarily impacted air quality in Pune. PM2.5 concentrations briefly spiked to around 201 µg/m³ in some areas due to firecrackers, pushing zones into the “poor” air-quality category. Fortunately, winds and light rains helped disperse pollutants quickly, bringing average post-festival PM2.5 levels down to about 66 µg/m³. Nonetheless, experts note that even these moderate levels can aggravate respiratory conditions and affect vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with asthma.

Winter’s Warning: When the Cold Arrives

As Pune approaches winter, calm nights and low wind speeds may trap pollutants near the ground, leading to smog. With night temperatures forecasted between 18–21°C and mostly dry days, conditions for air stagnation may emerge. Upcoming festivals, vehicle emissions, and domestic heating could further contribute to poor air quality. Previous winters in Pune have shown that such temperature inversions can persist for days, causing discomfort and potential health issues.

Looking Ahead: Can Pune Breathe Easier?

Today’s showers may provide temporary relief, but Pune’s air quality remains vulnerable as winter approaches. Civic authorities and residents alike need to remain vigilant about emissions from transport, industry, and domestic sources. While meteorological conditions like rain and wind offer brief improvement, sustainable practices and awareness will determine if the city can breathe easier in the coming weeks.
