New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured India that Moscow will continue supplying energy resources and fertilisers amid disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia crisis. The assurance came during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s meeting with Putin in Moscow on Monday.
The discussions focused on strengthening India-Russia economic ties, energy cooperation, trade, technology and preparations for upcoming multilateral meetings, including the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Putin said Russia was increasing fertiliser supplies to India and was ready to further expand cooperation to support Indian agriculture.
“Energy and fertiliser supplies remain important areas of cooperation,” Putin said, adding that Moscow was working to resolve issues related to supplies for Indian farmers and the agriculture sector.
Russia has emerged as one of India’s major energy partners, particularly in crude oil supplies. The two countries have continued economic engagement despite global disruptions and geopolitical challenges.
While highlighting the growth in India-Russia trade, Jaishankar pointed out that the increase has also led to a widening trade imbalance between the two countries.
According to Jaishankar, bilateral trade in goods increased from around $13 billion in 2021-22 to nearly $60 billion in 2025-26. However, the trade deficit has also expanded significantly, crossing $50 billion.
Jaishankar said addressing this imbalance would remain a key priority and stressed the need for better market access, removal of trade barriers, stronger payment mechanisms and greater business cooperation.
During his Moscow visit, Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to President Putin and said India looks forward to his participation in upcoming global meetings.
Jaishankar said PM Modi hopes Putin will attend the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13.
The summit is expected to discuss major global economic and political challenges, along with strengthening cooperation among BRICS nations.
The two sides also reviewed cooperation in several sectors, including nuclear energy, technology, space, connectivity and transportation.
Russia highlighted its role in the Kudankulam nuclear power project and expressed interest in expanding nuclear cooperation with India, including new power projects and localisation of equipment production.
Both countries are also working on transport and technology partnerships, including the development of high-speed electric trains based on the Vande Bharat platform.
The latest discussions underline the continued importance of India-Russia ties amid changing global dynamics. With energy security, food supply chains and geopolitical challenges becoming major concerns worldwide, both countries are looking to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
Russia’s assurance on fuel and fertiliser supplies comes at a time when countries are closely monitoring the impact of West Asia tensions on global energy markets and commodity availability.
