New Delhi: A leading Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten, has come under heavy criticism after publishing a cartoon depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a snake charmer, triggering accusations of racism and outdated colonial stereotypes.
The illustration showed PM Modi holding a flute, with a fuel pipeline depicted as a snake. It was published alongside a headline describing him as “a clever and slightly annoying man,” which intensified public backlash.

Critics argued that the imagery reinforces long-standing colonial-era tropes about India and reduces a modern global leader to a cultural caricature.
The cartoon surfaced amid a diplomatic exchange involving a Norwegian journalist who questioned PM Modi during a joint statement event. While the Prime Minister did not respond at the venue, the issue later drew criticism from India’s Ministry of External Affairs over how the interaction was portrayed.
The illustration sparked strong reactions online, with users calling it offensive and inappropriate. Many accused the publication of relying on outdated stereotypes, while others said it reflected a “colonial mindset” still present in sections of Western media.
