New Delhi: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was stopped while he was moving towards Jantar Mantar along with a large group of INDIA bloc MPs and other Opposition leaders. The protest has focused on allegations concerning voter-list revisions and demands for greater accountability from the Election Commission.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also detained after she refused to leave the protest site. She alleged that women police personnel manhandled her and other protesters during the police action.
The detentions came amid an intensifying Congress campaign against the Election Commission and CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have raised questions over the SIR exercise and alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. The Congress has demanded accountability from the poll panel, while the government and BJP have rejected the Opposition's allegations.
The latest police action has added another flashpoint to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling alliance and the Opposition over the Election Commission, SIR and voter-list revisions.
