New Delhi: Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court order that directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforecement of Directorate (ED) to examine allegations by a BJP worker, claiming he holds assets disproportionate to his income.

Earlier, in May this year, the High Court had asked the CBI and the ED to verify the complaint of disproportionate assets made against Gandhi by BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir. The High Court further clarified that the probe agencies could take appropriate steps permissible under the law.

After hearing the counsel for the parties and persuing the material available on record, the High Court directed all parties in the case, including the newly-impleaded opposite parties, to file response within a period of eight weeks. By filing response in the shape of counter, the progress in respect of complaint submitted by the petitioner to the afforesaid agencies may be approsed to the court, it added.

The High Court observed that if the complaint of the petitioner was received, the allegations of the complaints may be verified as per law. Both the CBI and ED were allowede to take appropriate steps permissible under the law.

The Congress leader challenged this order of the High Court before the Apex Court. According to the Supreme Court's website, the matter is likely to come up for hearing on August 17 before the Bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymala Bagchi and Justice V Mohana.
