Jaipur: Rajasthan Police got its new chief today. The BJP government has appointed senior IPS officer Rajeev Sharma as the new DGP of the state. Sharma was selected from three names shortlisted by the UPSC, based on his seniority, service record and experience at the Centre and state level, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The state government had earlier sent a panel of 7 IPS officers to the UPSC- Rajiv Sharma, Sanjay Agarwal, Anand Srivastava, Rajesh Nirvan, Rajesh Arya, Govind Gupta, Anil Paliwal

UPSC approved 3 names (Rajeev Sharma, Rajesh Nirvana, Sanjay Agarwal)

The order was issued after final approval from the Chief Minister's Office

Acting DGP's tenure ends

Dr Ravi Prakash Meharda, who was given additional charge after former DGP Utkal Ranjan Sahu became RPSC chairman, retired today.

Who is Rajeev Sharma?

Sharma is a senior IPS officer who has held several important positions at the state and central level. His appointment is being seen as an important step towards strengthening law and order in Rajasthan. Rajiv Sharma, who has been made the new DGP of Rajasthan, is a 1990 batch IPS officer. He originally hails from Uttar Pradesh. Rajiv Sharma has been on central deputation for a long time.

Earlier, he was an IG in Bharatpur and Bikaner. Rajiv Sharma has held important posts like DG ACB, DG Law and Order, and RPA Director. He has held various responsibilities, including the post of Joint Director in CBI. He has a good experience of crime control along with policing.

He has served as Superintendent of Police in Rajasthan, mainly in Jhalawar, Dausa, Rajsamand, Jaipur Traffic, Bharatpur, and Jaipur. Not only this, he has also held the post of Bharatpur and Bikaner IG. He has also been DG of ACB. Rajiv Sharma has obtained an MA and then an MPhil degree. His home district is Mathura.

He was set to retire in March next year, but his appointment as DGP extends his tenure for a fixed 2-year term
