Key Rajya Sabha Polls Underway for 11 Seats Across Three States
New Delhi: The election process for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats is underway across the country. Voting will be held today on Monday for a total of 11 seats in Bihar, Odisha, and Haryana. These include five seats from Bihar, four from Odisha, and two from Haryana. The election results will also be announced on Monday. This time, elections are being held for a total of 37 Rajya Sabha seats across the country, of which candidates have already been elected unopposed on 26 seats.
While the equations for four of the five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar are considered clear, the contest for the fifth seat has become extremely interesting. This seat is a direct contest between Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shivesh Ram and Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate AD Singh. To win this seat, the opposition Grand Alliance needs to keep its 35 MLAs united, along with the support of five AIMIM MLAs and one BSP MLA.
AIMIM's stance in Bihar has made the election even more interesting. Recently, a meeting was held between AIMIM state president Akhtarul Imam and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, but no concrete decision was reached. According to political sources, AIMIM may either abstain from voting or support another candidate. Furthermore, there is speculation that the IIP and some Congress MLAs may also vote in favor of the NDA.
Voting is underway for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana. The BJP is considered a near-certain winner in one of these seats, while the contest for the other is a highly contested one. The Congress has nominated Karmaveer Baudh, a move that has reportedly angered some senior party leaders. The BJP has supported independent candidate Satish Nandal, and it is expected that some disgruntled Congress MLAs may switch sides during the voting.
Political controversy has also emerged in Odisha ahead of the elections. The BJP has accused BJD Rajya Sabha candidate Sanrut Mishra of concealing information in his election affidavit. BJP state spokesperson Anil Biswal said Mishra did not mention his affiliation with the Biju Naveen Inspirational Foundation in his affidavit. However, the BJD has yet to officially respond to this allegation.
