Kolkata: The West Bengal government has launched a special nutrition support scheme for tribal families, under which eligible households will receive rice, pulses, cooking oil and soya bean every week.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched the scheme on Friday at a state-level programme in Kalajharia village in the tribal-dominated Jhargram district. According to the state government, around 70,000 families in Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur districts are expected to benefit from the initiative. Eligible tribal households in Purulia and Alipurduar are also set to be covered.

Additional Food Support Beyond Rations

Adhikari said the scheme would be separate from the food grains provided under the Pradhan Mantri Anna Suraksha Yojana. Its primary objective is to ensure that eligible families, particularly those belonging to particularly vulnerable tribal groups, have access to nutritious food and do not face shortages because of financial hardship.

Pension Hike And Financial Aid For Students

The chief minister also announced measures aimed at supporting elderly members of the tribal community and encouraging students to continue their education.

According to Adhikari, the monthly pension for elderly members of Scheduled Tribes has been increased to Rs 1,500. He also announced financial assistance of Rs 800 under the Scheduled Tribe scholarship scheme for two lakh students in Jhargram.
