New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Centre to ensure daily medical monitoring of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 19 days at Jantar Mantar. The court also recorded the Centre's assurance that timely medical intervention would be provided if government doctors consider it necessary.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that the life of every citizen is important and instructed authorities to keep a close watch on Wangchuk's health.
The Bench asked government doctors to conduct regular clinical examinations and said appropriate medical treatment should be provided whenever required based on expert advice.
Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Wangchuk's condition was already being monitored by government medical teams. He assured the Bench that any treatment or medical intervention recommended by doctors would be carried out without delay.
Taking note of the assurance, the High Court disposed of the petition after directing authorities to continue daily health assessments and act whenever necessary.
The petition had sought urgent medical care for Wangchuk, including hospitalisation if required, citing concerns over his prolonged fast.
According to doctors monitoring his condition, Wangchuk's weight has dropped to 56.65 kg, a loss of more than 9 kg since the hunger strike began on June 28. His latest medical readings showed a blood pressure of 105/61 mmHg, blood sugar level of 80 mg/dL, and oxygen saturation of 97%.
