Sonam Wangchuk Lays Down Terms Before Parliament March (Img: Dynamite News)
New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced three conditions for ending his indefinite hunger strike as the Cockroach Janta Party prepares for its proposed “Chalo Sansad” march in Delhi.
In a handwritten note issued from Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk said he could end his fast on July 20 if the government accepted responsibility for failures in the education system, including paper leaks and other irregularities affecting students.
Wangchuk said he would also consider ending the fast if Members of Parliament, CJP representatives and leaders of political parties assured him that education-related accountability would be raised in Parliament.
He added that if his health prevented him from continuing, MPs and leaders from different parties could visit him at the hospital and give a similar commitment.
Wangchuk, who is on the 23rd day of his fast, was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on July 18.
In his note, Wangchuk alleged that he was being kept under “illegal detention” and that his movement, communication and speech had been restricted.
His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has also questioned the medical process and alleged that doctors who had monitored him during the protest were not being allowed access.
Thousands of supporters have gathered near Jantar Mantar ahead of the proposed Parliament march. Protesters are demanding accountability over paper leaks, student suicides and alleged failures in the education system.
Delhi Police, however, said no permission had been granted for the march and urged citizens not to participate in any unauthorised procession.
