Srinagar: Srinagar Police have busted an alleged narcotics supply network operating in the Downtown area, arresting eight people and recovering a large quantity of prohibited drugs, a pistol, Rs 85.76 lakh in cash and gold worth around Rs 1.05 crore, officials said on Thursday.
The case has been registered as FIR No. 135/2026 at Safakadal Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Arms Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police identified the arrested accused as Mohammad Waseem Zargar, Haris Hameed Malla, Aqib Saleem Dar, Inam Ahmad Zargar, Sahib Ahmad Ganaie, Ansar Hussain Bhat, Peer Shakoor and Haroon Pandit. Two other suspects, identified by police as Faizan Firdous Khanday alias Farzan Pujj and Mohd Shahvar Aleem of Muzaffar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, are currently absconding.
According to police, the investigation led to the recovery of several types of prohibited drugs. These include approximately 3.830 kg of codeine, 40 grams of heroin, 414 tramadol tablets/capsules, around 2,18,500 tapentadol tablets and 1,200 pregabalin capsules.
A pistol was also recovered during the operation. The scale and variety of the alleged drug haul have prompted investigators to examine the wider supply chain and possible interstate links.
Police said the operation also resulted in the recovery of approximately Rs 85,76,800 in cash. Investigators also recovered 108 gold coins and other gold items and jewellery, with their total value estimated by police at around Rs 1.05 crore. In another financial action, approximately Rs 1.07 crore held in multiple bank accounts has been frozen as part of the ongoing investigation.
Srinagar SSP Sandeep Chakravarty said the operation was initiated by M R Gunj Police and involved searches at multiple locations. Raids were conducted in Srinagar as well as Chandigarh and Ambala, with assistance from the Punjab Police, officials said.
Police have also attached a residential property belonging to Mohammad Waseem Zargar in Patlipora, Chattabal. Two vehicles have also been attached in connection with the investigation.
According to the SSP, the investigation indicates an organised supply network allegedly involved in bringing illegal drugs from outside Jammu and Kashmir into the Valley. Police are also examining the possible role of pharmaceutical companies in the suspected supply chain.
The SSP described the operation as a significant breakthrough and said investigators would continue pursuing the network and those allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
Police said the investigation remains underway to establish the network’s complete structure, trace its forward and backward linkages and identify additional suspects. Officials said further arrests and recoveries could follow as investigators continue examining the alleged supply chain and financial links.
